Depends what you mean by "bad" battery.
If it's the original battery that came with the laptop then it is
past its usable lifespan.
A new, better (longer lasting) one can be had through online
retailers like <http://otherworldcomputing.com/>
specifically here: <http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/powerbook/batteries/>
If it's a newer battery, and it powers up but the screen is black
than yes, it could be motherboard problems.
