Yes Linux could work in lieu of OS-X. It would also be cheaper. However I
don't believe that Ubuntu have a version for PowerPC chips. 

Actually there is a version (Ubuntu) that was written for PPC Macs. I have a copy, ran it on a Pismo. Google for it, it was free.
