[iBook] How do you Optimise a sluggish iBook

I have an iBook details are as follows:

   Machine Name:	iBook G4
   Machine Model:	PowerBook6,5
   CPU Type:	PowerPC G4  (1.2)
   Number Of CPUs:	1
   CPU Speed:	1.33 GHz
   L2 Cache (per CPU):	512 KB
   Memory:	512 MB
   Bus Speed:	133 MHz
   Boot ROM Version:	4.8.7f1
   Serial Number:	4H51907SS85

It is operating very sluggishly, with the spinning ball operating a  
high percentage of the time.

I am planning to install additional memory,  1.0GB (1024MB) PC2700  
DDR SODIMM 200 Pin Memory.

Is there any utility or program out there which I could use to make  
my computer operate faster, with no intervention of the spinning ball
