I find it funny that tomorrow is a big day for iTunes and yet you hear more rumors and ideas about iTunes on other emailing lists than the "iTunes emailing list" ;) Here is a rumor that I found quite interesting. -----Original Message----- From: bigtoot at mac.com [mailto:bigtoot at mac.com] Sent: Saturday, April 26, 2003 10:51 PM Just a quick thought about Apple's impending music download service and the DRM system they're going to employ... If I've understood the rumors about this, Apple's new mp4 format 'registers' your copy of iTunes and then only allows the music you've downloaded to play with that copy of iTunes - or on your registered iPod? Does this also mean that, in future, any mp4 (or mp3?) you rip using the new iTunes will also only play with that same version of iTunes? The new iTunes must come equipped with some kind of unique inbuilt ID (or you create this when you register it with Apple) so thereby preventing you sharing your music via P2P? If this is the case, does Apple (or anyone else) think users will happily switch to a 'secured' version of iTunes just for the 'benefit' of paying for downloaded music? I'm not condoning copyright theft, but if this is the plan, it seems a bit flawed to me... mp3 Rage anyone? :-)
