OS X Hints thread:

personal setup is simple - one dedicated "for iPod" playlist into 
which I manually drag tracks, supplemented by a couple of smart 
playlists which move contain up to a specific maximum of songs. One 
is based on recently-played tracks, another on recent additions, and 
so on...
