Yes, the information is written to the song's file.  If you are 
deleting duplicates you have to be very careful about what you do.  I 
have not found an easy solution to this problem.  These scripts can 
help, because you can show the comment field in the list and as you 
delete duplicates you could copy/paste the comments from the deleted 
file to the one you are going to keep.
