An item on my iTunes wish list has been keywords [sub-genre] akin to
iPhoto's keywords.
My main music of choice is jazz which begs for sub-classification; but
using custom genres in iTunes would be numerous and
unwieldy--jazzintrumentalhardbop...jazzsvocalcontemporaryfemale...and
on and on. I'm considering using the new 'beats per minute' feature in
iTunes 4 to code my own keywords since I doubt I'll ever use this tag
as it was intended. Something like this:

Key Defined....Instrumental....Male[s] Vocal....Female[s] Vocal....M/F
Duets and Group Vocal

^-Works with any genre
*-New Orleans and Chicago styles
$-Film, theater, Standards with jazz genre

I can sort on the BPM column and quickly go to all my bebop male vocal
tracks [13] or instrumental west coast cuts [4]. And this code matrix
is easily memorized. Or I could use the Genre tag for the broad classes
[swing, bebop, etc] and define the key codes descriptively--'Hot',
'Cool', 'Blue', etc. Some might simply want to use 1 for female and 2
for male and 3 for mixed singers to sort their music by just those
criteria.

This scheme also can be utilized by smart playlists--a constantly
updated list of all your jazz genre, latin style, mixed vocalists from
the 1960s if one was so inclined. I believe some balance between genre
and a short key code list can greatly enhance iTunes classify and sort
capabilities.
