That seemed to say that I was deauthorizing the whole computer from ever playing any Apple Store music. It wasn't clear whether doing this had anything to do with my iPod.
Q. What would happen if I authorized a computer that I never again had access to and forgot to deauth it before I left? Is there any way to deauthorize within the iPod rather than having to be on that specific machine to do it?

Just go the Advanced menu, and then Deauthorize Computer.
