iTunes/iPod order help needed

I need help getting my "tunes" in order. I end up putting periods in 
front of a title to get it to move to the right place. that can't be 
the way to do it. Say I have a book that has 6 discs. I import disc 1  
into iTunes, then disc 2 etc. Sometimes it imports in the right order 
and sometimes not. I can click on the title bar at the top but I want 
the library in order of genre. When I make a play list and click on 
that title bar to put the order correct it works but when it shows up 
in my iPod it's in the order that appears in the library. So it looks 
like I need a primer on this. I read all I could find in the help 
section but couldn't find anything that quite addresses this problem.

ps I looked at the lower left and I don't have a button that would 
effect the order.
