Why connect it to the computer? Just hook the iPod up to the speakers and play it directly from the iPod. I do think that the other suggestion of setting the iPod to manually update would probably work, but I'm not sure how that would affect their syncing with their own iTunes at home. I don't think iTunes is really designed to have lots of random iPods connected to it to play songs off them.
