[iTunes] converting to mp3 saga continues

Hi, I am having  problem with my iTunes 2.04, which I use with my classic 
Macs, a Powerbook 5300c and a Performa 6400....

At one time, both copies of my iTunes did the same thing; wait about 20 
seconds before playing a song after it was chosen, and between songs.

On my 5300 laptop, I check the preferences and found out that the "battery 
Saver" was on. I turned it off, and it did the trick, no more lengthy delays 
before iTunes plays a song.

However, on my 6400 desktop, the "battery saver" option was on, BUT it was 
also shaded, so I could not check it on or off.

Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks...
