[iTunes] deleting files from my iPod

I have "manually update iPod" checked, because I have a great
deal more books and music on my computer than will fit on my
iPod - might that be making the difference? when I deleted 4
books, I didn't notice any change in the memory notice even
after I unplugged my iPod and plugged it back in again.
