[iTunes] iTunes won't import mp3s anymore

I'm back from my vacation now, and tried this, and it didn't
work.

the only way I can seem to get the mp3 files in to iTunes is to
go File>import and import them one at a time: import doesn't
seem to let me select a range of files to bring in all at once.

It didn't used to work this way!
