[iTunes] the new iPod Touch

Does anyone know how much "free space" you have to have to work the  
iPod Touch.  My housekeeper loaded her iPod with books and had 1 GB  
plus a little free space left. The top buttons worked, the calendar,  
contacts etc but the "songs, Videos, etc would not respond at all. I  
just did a reset and then loaded only a dozen books. I'm hoping it  
will work okay when I check it but I'd like to know if that was the  
cause of the bottom half freeze.
