[iTunes] Getting older episodes of podcasts (no longer available thru iTunes store)

This is a "problem" I've had repeatedly.

I discover a podcast long after it has begun.

I like it enough to want to go back and manually d/l the old episodes.
Do it, add to iTunes. 
And yet iTunes doesn't recognize them as podcasts, in the way it distinguishes podcasts from plain old "music."
