I know the 'books have a set of keys on the keyboard to adjust the 
backlight setting...so you can turn the light behind the screen waaaay 
down to save battery life. Someone was probably playing with the light 
just before you got to it...

As far as the iMac goes...that's a bummer that it doesn't look as good 
in one of Apple's stores...
