I don't know if it's better, but I can't afford to have the speakers plugged 
into the Cube full time.  Daisy chaining and plugging anything into the 
keyboard has never been very satisfactory, either.  I use a USB hub, and mostly it 
works fine.  Separate power supply, so nothing overloads the Cube's power 
supply, and mostly things run as they should.
If there are occasionally times when some peripheral proves balky, I just 
tinker with connections and then it starts working again, usually for a couple of 
months before I have to repeat.  i consider that acceptable.
