[CUBE] The fax in a cube?

I believe by fax card you actually mean the modem. Yes, modem is on a 
separate board and can be safely removed. There was (is?) a cubeport 
card that was plugged in instead of modem and provides you with a 
old-style serial port.
As far as the heat goes, I suspect that the benefit would be minimal.
