thanks everyone for your suggestions just got back from the store 
bought the cheapest external drive they had it is a LG GSA-5160D with 
firewire and usb 2.0 says it is mac compatible so wish me luck 16x 
super multi dvd/cd rewriter. reads and writes all formats +&-
