Panther Behavior

After Installing Panther, startup now has desktop, dock and 10-15sec 
delay for menu bar to load.
While waiting for menu bar, clock, volume annd airport icons are 
visible against the desktop picture.
Typical for iBook & cube. Did "fsck -y" in single use mode & was 
returned with with the statement "fsck -f force"
Is this typical performance? Jag loaded much faster (it seems).   Rod
