I tend to do this with the terminal,

 > cd /Volumes
 > ls


from there you should see your iPod, however you named it. cd in there. 
There will be a whole bunch of dir called F00, F01 etc. each one 
contains your music files.

To grab the whole lot do:

 > mkdir  ~/mymusicfromipod
 > cp -R * ~/mymusicfromipod

that should get you your files into the folder  mymusicfromipod in your 
home directory.
