Hope it's not contagious, I just had the same thing happen to  a 32 mb 
SmartMedia Card  (Memorex) 1 yr old.
I only had a few photos stored on it . I have a Microtech Card Reader and 
previously as I tried to get it on to the desk top I would get the  message 
"CARD ERROR" , finally if I try to get it recognized it crashes my Mac. (733 
G4 - 9.2) Fuji MX700 shuts it self down with card installed . It 's been 
working fine untill I tried to down load pictures today.
