Yes, I think Tolkein was a linguist of some sort, and studied languages all
his life. He was intensely interested by them, and I think he used 'The
Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy partly as a vehicle for this.

My Brother lives and works in New Zealand, where they are shooting the
trilogy. He's the editor of a motorcycle magazine there, and gets to test
all the latest motorcycles along the countryside.

I'm also a bit of a National Geographic nut (thanks for the link), and I
always buy a load of the old magazines whenever I'm at a car boot sale. The
great thing about those magazines is that people who buy them always look
after them, such that when you find them in car boot sales for merely a few
pence, they are in as immaculate a condition as the latest edition being
sold in the shops!

Oh, and for the record, I have a Powerbook Duo 230 with Duo Dock. I've just
got it back from the person I lent it to, so Malcolm Cornelius; if you're
reading this, I am still interested in the sled and british phone connector
cable :)

I'm writing this e-mail on an iMac, an indigo blue one, with an iSub
underneath the desk that pumps out bass beats and makes the window pane
rattle in its frame!
