Duo internal modem VS DuoDock modem?

Is the modem port in the DuoDock an actual modem or
is it just an "extention" of the Duo internal modem?

In other words, if I took out the internal modem to
fit an ADB port in a 230 or 280, would the modem in
the DuoDock still work?
