PC iPod on Mac

For understandable reasons, Apple are saying the iPod won't work
cross-platform without a re-format. Since a Firewire HD formatted with Fat32
works quite happily on a Mac (at least it does on OS9), why shouldn't an
iPod also formatted (as per Windows version) with Fat32?
Has anybody on the list got a Windows iPod they could try on a Mac? If so:
1)does it mount and work on the Mac desktop as a normal HD
2)does the iTunes software work
