Just to add some noise to this discussion:

There are enclosures available that have *both* Firewire and USB.  I 
have one that contains a FAT-formatted hard drive so that I can 
transfer files to/from anything.  (well, anything considered somewhat 
modern - it's useless with my Sinclair ZX-81 ;-)
