Acrobat/Illustrator conflict

Recently developed an apparent conflict with Illustrator v9.0
Message comes up "Acrobat PDF file format is having difficulties. The
file may be damaged."
After hitting the " OK "  I lose ALL tool boxes and floating pallets.
Switching from Illustrator to another program , then back sometimes
brings the pallets back , but not always.
Also I've put the computer to sleep ?  by using the Illustrator Key
command to convert text to outline ( Apple, Shift, O )
