IE favorites

Can anyone tell me why, after a certain period of time, IE favorites 
will not let me simply click on them, instead they give me a pull down 
menu that will only let me open that favorite in a new window.  
Sometimes if I click on the far left side of the favorite I can still 
select it, but after time, that even goes and then Im stuck to opening 
a new window.  The only remedy Ive found so far is to quit it and 
restart.
