[G4] problem capturing video or copying large files to SCSI hard drive

Sounds like it's going to fail... Or you have defictive SCSI cabling 
(loose contacts, cable's insulator worn out, ...)...

Depanding on the issue:
Back it up and have it either break down for good and/or exchanged 
(SCSI drive have 5 years warenty)
Replace your cable with non defective ones
