OSX file naming conventions

It used to be that some characters were taboo in X. Some of the option
characters, especially the "/". If you tried to name a file with a "/" the
OS wouldn't even let you. Even got worse if you tried to drag one of these
file and or folders that had a "/" in the file name to the terminal, you
would always get an error. All of a sudden there seems to be no problem with
this. The OS lets you name files with "/"'s and if you drag one of these
files and or folders into the terminal it changes the character to ":".
Anyone know when this happend? Or if there is any info on i?
