Are you plugging it into an unpowered USB hub or through the hub on the USB keyboard? If so, it may not be getting the required power to operate. I have a CanoScan LiDE 20 that operates the same way, and it will not work unless it's plugged into a powered hub (one which has a power supply plugged into an electrical socket) or directly into the onboard USB or PCI USB card.
