[G4] Start up tone too loud

You can also try under the Sounds preference panel - there are two 
volume controls (one for alerts and other for normal sounds)...try 
adjusting alerts down.  Also if you have external speakers hooked up 
you can select it such that all alerts get played through the built in 
speaker (which is what I do) - my startup tone is very quiet...
