[G4] running word on osX and os9.

The file formats in Mac Office 2001 (and Mac Office 98) are identical 
to the ones used by Office X (and Windows Office 2000 and Office XP). 
You should have no problems with exchanging documents. I have to use 
windows at work and I swap files between Office X and Office XP 
frequently.
