I have 10.3 running on a Yikes/400 and I never upgraded my firmware. However, you make it sound like you installed 10.3 and then went back to 10.2.8. I have never done this. None of the OSs have ever given me a bad time, with the exception of the Aladdin DVD which almost killed my startup drive when I tried to play it in OS 9.
