[G4] "Disk in use" Shared volume won't disconnect

When transferring a file to another computer (both OSX, ethernet), 
sometimes I can't break the connection without restarting one of the 
computers. When I drag the shared volume to the trash I get the 
message "The operation could not be completed because the disk is in 
use".

What is keeping the connection open? I've shut down all applications 
on both computers and still get the "Disk in use" warning.
