Obviously, you might have to download it from another machine and 
copy over the installer after starting your balky machine in Safe 
Mode (hold down the shift key until the login screen appears).

Try downloading and installing the marvelous utility called 
"applejack."  (You can find it on Versiontracker.com). Read the 
instructions about how to boot into single user mode (CMD-S) and then 
type a command like "applejack AUTO restart".
