[G4] SCSI Help, please

I have a dual 450 MHz processor Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics) with 960
MB RAM and two internal HDDs: a 100 GB running Tiger 10.4.8 and an 80
GB running OS 9.2.2 (dual boot).

I'm trying to retire a 1998-vintage old world beige G3. However, I
don't want to lose my investment in SCSI peripherals, which work just
fine: a UMAX Astra 1200S scanner and an Alps MD-1300 printer.

I bought an Adaptec SCSI card, which works fine in the G4 with either
OS. Unfortunately the system sees the scanner but not the printer
and I can only use the scanner when I boot into OS 9--it won't run
under classic and there is no OS X driver that I could find for this
scanner. I did find a driver for the Alps printer (ppmtoppd), but I
can't figure out how to compile, link and install it.

I was able to use this scanner in the past on the G3 running Ubuntu
Linux; therefore, I know that SANE (or was it XSANE?) and gimp work
with it. Unfortunately I can't get Fink Commander to install either
the SANE front or backend or gimp on the G4. The install aborts
complaining about wrong dependencies (or something like that).

The instructions for installing the printer from Linuxprinting.org
using foomatic are even worse--daunting, in fact. Before diving into
what looks like a computer science masters thesis, I would appreciate
any clues anyone could give me that would help me get the scanner and/
or printer working. Thanks!

Ernest
