[G4] Advice on iPod purchase

I've never seen an adapter like you describe (FW to USB 2.0).
Depending on what cards are in your slots, you may have options. For
example, if one of your cards is another ATA controller, you could
get a multi-function ATA controller that has USB 2.0 ports on it,
like the Tempo Trio (ATA-133, firewire and USB 2.0 ports). I picked
one of these up cheap and it'll be my solution when I get my Digital
Audio G4 up and running with a CPU upgrade.

Depending on what you cards are, you may be able to consolidate some
of them onto a single card and free up a slot.

Good luck.
