Depends on the e-mail program you're using and the settings you have for it.
For example, I'm using Eudora 5.2.1 and under settings->Fonts and
Display->Display graphic in messages is unchecked (as is animate animated gif
images), so I get the same "oddity" you do. I detest anything other than plain
text, so it suits my needs.
