[G4] DVD player and external drives.

I'm reminded of a problem I just came across:

I have a G4 Xserve which has an internal tray loading cdrom. I tried to use my external Sony DVD drive via firewire to play a DVD but Apples DVD player gave an an error indicating no DVD drive. I can play DVD's via VLC without any problems.

Has anybody actually used Apples DVD player with an external DVD drive?
