[G4] External firewire hard drives.

I have two LaCie 250gb external firewire hard drives.
Both spin up when power is applied but neither show up on the Desktop  
of my iMac G5. I have tried with two different firewire cables.
Referring to the Internet, it seems that many people have the same  
trouble with external hard drives. This doesn't add up to me. What is  
so difficult? Should be a simple plug and play situation.
Meanwhile, as neither drive is recognised, I am unable to apply any  
testing or updating to them. Seems like a lost cause.
