Which is why I did an archive and install of the OS on the wonky drive. 
Twice. If you take a look at the display setting procedure I described you will 
see what the steps are. Or would be, if they were normal. I thought about 
trashing that part of system preferences but as I recall I couldn't identify 
them anyplace.
