Alan: It would NOT be safe to simply short out the 
speaker pins. The average impedance of a loudspeaker
is indeed low, from 4 to 8 ohms, but it is not zero.
Try connecting an 8 ohm 2-watt resistor across the 
terminals instead. A cheap carbon one is fine. 

Also, check Apple/system preferences/sound/output,
and see what output is selected.
