Why hasn't anyone mentioned the "Target Mode" method?

Simply connect the two machines with a FireWire cable and start one of them in Target Mode and the other in normal mode. The mac that was started in Target Mode shows up on the other desktop as a second drive and files can be copied from one drive to the other.

This works wonderfully and avoids the hassle of creating a "shared machine" network. Of course, this is the usually used method when only a temporary connection is desired. If you want to make a permanent connection, then you do have to go through the sharing procedure.

I've used both methods successfully according to my needs at the time.
