Everymac.com has a good utility to help you identify your Mac, the most recent OS it can handle and other info. Earle is right about that 'About This Mac' in the Apple tab. Be sure to click the 'More Info' tab that shows up to get much more detailed information about your hardware configurations. You can generally update within your OS platform (OSX 10.0, or from Snow Leopard, etc.) for free via Apple's support web page. Moving between discrete OS versions generally requires paying a fee, whether for a download, or by purchasing an install disc. Always good to have a restore disc on hand in case calamity strikes. This listserve or Craigslist might be good places to find folks wanting to part with update OS discs. The first item listed is "About This Mac". Click on that. Mine says: OS X Version 10.8.5 (There is also a button for "Software Update' that you can use to see whether there is any new software available for your computer.) Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 24 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Startup Disk Int. 500GB-1 There is another button labeled "More Info" where you can click on "System Report" and get tons more data about your computer. The "Software Update" button will lead you to the data about updating your software.
