Sorry to hear about the flu. After your comments, I decided to do a
little research. I have come to the conclusion that we're both correct
(although you're probably more correct - my apologies). Here's what I
did: I set up calendar events for a few minutes to an hour or so in the
future, and some for the following morning. I shut down the mac
completely, restarted it, and waited. I have iCal set to start up in
the background at login. Interestingly, the events that were in the
immediate future, within the next few minutes to an hour, did not set
off their alarms once the machine was booted and the prescribed time
came and went. So I put me and the mac to sleep for the night, woke up
this morning, and sure enough, the alarms I had set to go off the next
day (today) worked. I had not noticed this phenomenon before since I
only use iCal at home for personal events.

I searched Apple's support knowledge base, and guess what I found?
There's an article that describes this very condition. Check it out at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25655
This is a bug in my opinion.

For what it's worth, I used to use Entourage and I don't remember this
happening. Maybe that's something for you to consider?

HTH,
Barry
