16bit is higher resolution than 12bit. More detail- more natural sounding.
48khz is higher resolution than 32.
Cds are 16bit/44.1khz
DVDs and miniDV use 16bit/48khz as their high resolution setting.
DAT recorders also use 16bit/48khz
