iDVD + External Burners

A third-party vendor once sold a hack that allowed iDVD to be fooled 
into thinking the external was an Apple internal Superdrive.

However, this violated the agreement Apple had made with the MPEG-2 
copyright holders, and had the potential to cause enormous legal and 
technical issues for all parties.

The third-party vendor wisely pulled the software from distribution.

I doubt it would work with the burners now being sold anyway, and 
besides -- most of them come with their own brand of DVD 
authoring/burning software now.
