OT OSX question

Sorry to bring this here.
Yesterday I installed some HP software for a scanner. Ever since my  
machine has been lagging. Everything that used to just pop up gives me  
a beachball etc.
Normally I'd just run NOrton, but that's not an option these days...  
any suggestions?
