When I capture video on my iMac G4 800, I usually log out and then 
log back in while holding down the Shift key (I start holding the 
shift key before I hit the Return or click the Login button after 
typing in my password). This keeps most third-party software that 
normally starts at login from doing so.

It's worth a try if you haven't already.
